Car seats typically expire *six* years from the date of manufacture. Any used seat should be 'run through' a used seat safety checklist like this one: http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/usedsea… Before using it. Misuse by a former owner, an accident, a recall, expiration... all these and more can make a seat unsafe for your child.

"How many years can I use my carseat?"

"Many manufacturers now put "expiration" dates on their carseats. Six (6) years is the general recommendation. At most, 10 years is the accepted maximum lifetime of a carseat. The reasons for these limits involve possible degradation of the plastic shell and other parts, the possible loss/breakage of parts, and the fact that older seats will often not meet current government safety standards."

Is the date you found the date of manufacture? Or could it be the expiration date itself? These days most companies actually stamp it with "Do not use after xx/xx/xxxx" instead of stamping with the date of manufacture.

ETA: There is one brand of carseats (Fisher Price) which has an *8* year expiration date instead of six. But in any case it isn't that they 'go bad' the day the expiration hits... they just get older and weaker every day and the company cannot guarentee them to be safe after 6 (or at most 8) yrs.
