I have a five week old baby girl, and she literally hates her car seat. I thought babies liked to ride in their car seats - well not mine. As long as she is asleep she is fine, but as soon as she wakes up she screams bloody murder. I have checked to see that everything is secured properly, and nothing ever seems to be wrong. There is nothing pinching her. Most of the time her screaming instantly stops once she is removed, but I really want her to get used to having to ride in the seat because it is not likely that I will always have a second adult in the car to tend to her. I have also tried letting her cry it out, but the screams just seem to get more and more intense as time progresses. Are there any suggestions on how to make riding in the car less of a traumatic experience for my daughter?

Don't let her cry it out at this stage unless you're in the middle of driving and can't help her. Try purchasing a different car seat and see if that makes any difference. You can always return it if that's not the culprit. You can also visit people who are certified to help you with car seat safety. I remember the nurses at the hospital telling me they couldn't officially tell me how to properly secure my daughter (but they unofficially did- they didn't want her to be unsafe), but they said there are people who are actually trained in it. I don't know who they are or what their title is, but I'm sure you could contact the hospital or your daughter's pediatrician. Maybe despite having her in securely, there's still something amiss. One day my daughter was screaming like that in her car seat, and once I took off her little hat she was fine. Turns out the tag bothered her. You could also try riding in the back with her while someone else drives so that she knows you're there and feels secure. Who knows- maybe she flips out because she doesn't realize you're right there. Keep experimenting during trips you don't have to take so that you don't feel rushed to fix the problem.
